Quonset and Chinook Arch

This photo titled; “Quonset and Chinook Arch” has six clearly definable compositional elements. Let me describe my thought process while framing this image up. The four horizontal elements are the clouds at the top of the frame, the darker band created by the clear sky, the mid-ground field and hills, and lastly, the foreground scrub. The Quonset and trees to the left make up the 5th and 6th elements in the composition and everything is fully contained within the frame. The trees at the left background were framed deliberately and I was careful to not crop the left edge of them to keep them contained with in the image frame for balance.

When I am out in the field shooting, I am continually having a photographic conversation in my head about what I am seeing, how it affects me emotionally and visually and how it might make a good photograph. What is the main focal point? Do the other elements within the fame support that focal point? Is the image balanced?

16x9 framing is quite cinematic. The longer, narrower format works very beautifully with the grand landscapes of Southern Alberta. The more I print in this format, the more I like it for its visual grandeur.
